Elon Musk has revealed ambitious plans for Neuralink, and they go beyond controlling computers with your thoughts. The company is developing two brain implants, Telepathy and Blindsight, aimed at helping people with paralysis and severe vision loss. Musk also believes future advances could help people regain control of their hands and legs by reconnecting the brain with their limbs.

How Neuralink’s Telepathy can help people with paralysis

Neuralink’s first implant, Telepathy, translates brain signals into commands that control external devices. This allows people with severe paralysis to move a computer cursor, click on items, play games, write code, and create digital artwork. The company’s clinical trials are also exploring robotic arm control. Musk believes the technology could eventually transmit information faster than conventional speech or typing.

Hopefully, in a few years, we will be able to shunt signals from the motor and sensory areas of the brain to the limbs and enable people to use their hands and walk again

His latest prediction takes things further. Spinal cord injuries can cut the connection between your brain’s intentions and your body’s movements, even when your brain can still generate the signal to move. He hopes that future brain-computer interfaces will redirect signals from the brain’s motor and sensory regions to the limbs.

This could potentially bypass damaged communication pathways and help people walk or use their hands again. However, restoring natural movement remains a future possibility, not an established capability.

Blindsight implant aims to restore sight

Neuralink’s second device, Blindsight, aims to help people with severe vision loss, including those blind since birth. It uses a camera to capture surrounding images and sends visual information directly to the brain’s visual cortex, bypassing the damaged eyes or optic nerves.

Our second product is called Blindsight and it will, as the name suggests, enable even those who are completely blind or have never seen to see.

It is ready from an engineering standpoint. Just waiting on regulatory approval. https://t.co/2hPuw6QsnN

Musk says the technology is ready from an engineering standpoint and awaiting regulatory approval. Blindsight has received the FDA’s Breakthrough Device Designation, which can speed up development and review. However, this designation is not approval, and human clinical trials are still being prepared.

Both Telepathy and Blindsight show how Neuralink wants to use brain implants for more than computer control. The idea is to help people regain abilities that injuries or medical conditions have taken away. Whether the technology can deliver on that promise will depend on further clinical testing.
