Remember when Google Voice was just that free number you used to dodge spam calls? It’s come a long way since then, and today it’s taking its biggest leap yet: letting Gemini quietly sit in on your calls and handle the note-taking for you.

How does AI note taking work on calls?

The “Take notes for me” feature, already popular on Google Meet, is now coming to Voice. During any active call, you can tap Notes to start recording and transcription. Everyone on the call will hear an audio disclosure confirming the call is being recorded and captured by AI, so there’s no confusion about consent.

Once the call ends, Gemini hands you a neat summary with key points and action items, along with the full transcript and recording, right inside the Voice app. You’ll also get an email with a link to the notes, so nothing slips through the cracks.

Privacy-wise, your notes and recordings stay visible only to you. If other participants also turn on the feature, they get their own separate copies. Right now, it works in English and needs a Voice Standard or Premier subscription.

Do you need a Workspace subscription to use Voice now?

Google is finally opening up standalone Voice Starter and Standard plans to anyone with a Gmail account, no Workspace subscription needed. If you’re running a small business or side hustle, you can now get unlimited calls, texting, and premium features without paying for a whole Workspace suite.

For now, this is US-only, with other countries expected to follow. To sweeten the deal, Google is offering 50% off the Voice Standard plan for six months, bringing it down to $10 a month. That includes full access to the new AI note-taking feature too. If your work or side hustle involves taking tons of calls, this is one upgrade that’s hard to ignore, especially at half price.
