Microsoft is opening Xbox Cloud Gaming to players without a Game Pass subscription. Starting in November, anyone will be able to buy cloud playtime hours directly through the Xbox Store and stream games they already own, no subscription required.
How the new option works
Under the new system, players will buy blocks of cloud playtime hours through the Xbox Store and use them to stream eligible games they already own. Microsoft has not announced pricing yet, and the company says available hours and purchasing options will vary by market once the change goes live later this year.
According to GamesBeat, an insider familiar with Microsoft’s plans said players will not be billed by the minute or hour. Instead, hours will be sold in packages designed to match how people actually play, with pricing meant to reflect the cost of running the service. That distinction matters for anyone expecting a straightforward per-hour rate.
Xbox Cloud Gaming already runs on phones, tablets, PCs, and select smart TVs, so the new option effectively turns any of those into a way to play Xbox games without ever owning a console.
Aimed at casual gamers and those who own older hardware
The new option is aimed at people who only play games occasionally and don’t want to shell out for a monthly subscription for just a few hours of playtime. Xbox also points to owners of older hardware as a target audience. Cloud streaming lets Xbox One owners play titles built for Xbox Series X and S without buying new hardware, something the company says is especially useful in markets where consoles are harder to find or afford.
Framed this way, cloud streaming stops being just a Game Pass perk and becomes its own product with its own price tag. Microsoft says it will keep adding more games to cloud streaming throughout the year, though it has not said which titles will qualify for the pay-to-play option at launch.
Pricing for cloud playtime hours is still under wraps. Microsoft is expected to share more details, including a list of eligible games, before the November rollout. In addition to the pay-as-you-go option, Microsoft has announced cloud gaming limits for Game Pass subscribers, limiting playtime to 15 hours per month on the priciest plan.
