Glasses-free 3D has always felt like a luxury I could admire from afar. Those screens were built for design studios, not smaller desks like mine. But Sony’s new version is small enough to sit beside my keyboard, and I’m genuinely excited.

The company has unveiled the ELF-MN1, a 6-inch display that makes 3D characters and avatars look like they’re coming out of the screen without any special glasses or a headset. It plugs into a phone or PC with one USB-C cable, and that’s pretty much it (via Sony).

How does the ELF-MN1 show 3D without glasses?

The secret is eye tracking. Sensors follow your eyes and redraw the image in real time. Each eye sees a different view (similar to wearing differently colored eyeglasses), and your brain reads it as depth. An infrared (IR) sensor keeps tracking steady in dim rooms.

The three-dimensional effect works from roughly 12 to 31 inches away, or about 1 to 2.5 feet. However, only one viewer gets the proper picture. I believe that’s because it follows a single pair of eyes.

Sharpness helps too. At 403 pixels per inch, it’s Sony’s sharpest spatial display to date. Sony also says it suppresses crosstalk, the ghostly double images that show up in plenty of cheap 3D setups.

What do you need to run it, and what will it cost?

You’ll need a recent phone, such as an iPhone 15 or Galaxy S23 or newer, or a mid-range PC with a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. The star attraction is Gugenka’s HoloModel service of digital anime figures.

Sony is leaving the price open for now. The expected tag is around 54,000 yen, which roughly translates to $340. The 6-inch 3D display goes on sale in Japan on December 11, 2026. Demo units should be available at Sony Stores in Ginza and Nagoya from November 20.

If the device lands in the US, I bet plenty of customers will want a three-dimensional avatar dangling next to their laptop or keyboard.
