ReMarkable makes some of the best e-ink tablets on the market. However, there has always been one problem for prospective buyers: its high entry price. The ReMarkable Paper Pro costs too much, and the Paper Pro Move cannot be used as an independent device. It seems the company also realized this and is releasing a new e-ink tablet to address the issue.

The new addition to the ReMarkable family is called the ReMarkable Paper Pure, and if you have been eyeing a ReMarkable device but didn’t want to pay flagship prices, this might be the one.

The Paper Pure is a 10.3-inch black-and-white paper tablet that starts at $399. It ships with a Marker pen, and a Marker Plus with Sleeve Folio bundle is available for $449. At this starting price, the ReMarkable Paper Pure is an enticing purchase, so let’s check out what you get with this new e-ink tablet.

What do you get for $399?

The ReMarkable Paper Pure is slim, light, and surprisingly well-built for its price. At just 6mm thin and weighing 360 grams, it’s light and easy to carry. ReMarkable also claims that the Paper Pure offers the best battery life of all its devices. It can last up to three weeks on a single charge, based on roughly one hour of daily use.

According to the company, the third-generation black-and-white Canvas display is its crispest and whitest yet. That said, ReMarkable had to make some cutbacks to hit its price target. The Paper Pure doesn’t have a front light or color display.

That being said, if you mostly use your tablet for writing and note-taking, you won’t miss them. In fact, I purchased a Super Nomad that also doesn’t have either of these features, and I am quite happy.

Is the writing and software experience any good?

This is the question that matters most for an e-ink notebook, and the answer is yes. The Paper Pure uses the same textured writing surface as the flagship ReMarkable Paper Pro. Digital ink appears in just 21 milliseconds, and page navigation is up to twice as fast compared to the ReMarkable 2.

Plus, you get all the software features you get with its pricier Paper Pro version. You can take notes, read PDF documents and mark them, and even download web articles to read them offline.

There’s also an optional subscription service that enables more features. You can link it to Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook to auto-generate meeting notes, import documents from Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox, and search through your handwritten notes. There’s also AI-powered handwriting-to-text conversion.

If you were looking to purchase a ReMarkable tablet but the price scared you off, the ReMarkable Paper Pure might be the answer.
