Plex wants to force its users into a subscription trap, and honestly, I’m a little mad

I have been a Plex user for a long time, and I genuinely love what the app does. But when I read their latest announcement, I had to put my phone down and take a breath. Plex is raising the price of its Lifetime Plex Pass from $249.99 to $749.99 on July 1, 2026.

That’s not a price increase. That’s a 200% jump, and the way they’ve packaged it makes me even more annoyed. This comes on top of the price hike the company announced last year, taking the lifetime pass from $119.99 to $249.99 and the remote pass price hike it announced last month.

Is Plex trying to push everyone toward subscriptions?

In their announcement, Plex admitted they considered eliminating the Lifetime Pass entirely because recurring subscriptions are better for sustaining long-term development. They kept it, but at a price that makes it impossible to justify for most users.

I feel that pricing something out of reach is not that different from discontinuing it. The new lifetime price of $749.99 is equivalent to paying a decade of subscription at the current rate, which is absurd. It’s clear that the company is pushing new customers towards the subscription trap and that makes me mad.

To their credit, existing Lifetime Pass holders keep all their benefits without paying anything extra. Monthly and annual subscription pricing also remains unchanged for now. So, if you want to lock in that lifetime pass, do it ASAP.

Is there anything to look forward to?

To make the news easier to digest, Plex shared a roadmap of upcoming features alongside the announcement. Downloads are getting improvements, like grouping by show and auto-downloading new episodes.

Music and photo library support is coming back to mobile apps. Playlist creation, NFO metadata support, IPv6 support, and audio enhancements like dialog boosting are also on the way.

Plex roadmap

It’s a decent list, and I want to give them credit for sharing it. But a promising roadmap doesn’t make a 200% price hike easier to digest.

If Plex is a big part of your daily routine, you have until 12:01 AM UTC on July 1 to grab the Lifetime Pass at $249.99. After that, it goes to $749.99, and honestly, at that price, the subscription starts looking a lot more reasonable, which is exactly the point.
