Google Play is copying one of the Nintendo Switch’s handiest features

Google Play is borrowing one of the Nintendo Switch’s most useful little tricks. A new Sidekick tool called Playbacks captures a short clip after something interesting has already happened, sparing players from running a screen recorder throughout an entire game.

Playbacks is part of Google Play Store v53.8 and keeps saved clips on the phone. Google first announced it earlier this month, but the new Play Store update marks its arrival for players. Anyone who has watched a perfect win vanish because the record button came too late already understands the appeal.

How does Playbacks work

Playbacks lives inside Play Games Sidekick, Google’s overlay for supported Android games. When triggered, it saves the preceding 30 seconds and stores the resulting clip locally for later viewing.

A full screen recording still makes sense when you want an entire match or extended session. Playbacks handles the moments nobody plans, such as an unlikely win or a physics glitch that deserves evidence. You get the useful half-minute without filling your storage with footage of menus and uneventful grinding.

How close is it to Switch

The resemblance is hard to miss. Nintendo added video capture to the original Switch in 2017, letting players hold the Capture Button to save the same 30-second window in compatible games. Switch 2 continues the approach, with saved clips available through the console’s Album.

Nintendo puts that function on a dedicated hardware button. Google places it inside an onscreen Sidekick overlay. Either way, something good happens first, and you decide whether it was worth saving afterward. Google is copying the mechanic that makes the Switch feature so convenient.

Who can use Playbacks now

Sidekick with Playbacks is rolling out to select devices. Google hasn’t provided a complete list of supported phones and games. It also hasn’t detailed recording quality or how audio is handled.

Updating the Play Store may not make Playbacks appear immediately. Availability still depends on whether Sidekick supports your device and the game you’re playing. Google is years late to this particular replay, but Android gamers may still be glad it finally pressed save.
