The AI coding race is moving beyond chatbots that write code when developers prompt them to. DeepSeek wants its next agent to be a little more aggressive. The Chinese AI company has released a prototype called Super-Agent, an open-source coding tool that listens in on developer group chats, identifies coding problems, and suggests solutions without waiting to be called.

The move puts DeepSeek in more direct competition with Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, two prominent names in the rapidly-growing market for AI-powered software development. The bigger goal is clear: to design AI agents to be less assistants waiting for instructions, and more members of a development team who can take initiative.

DeepSeek’s coding agents are going to stop waiting for prompts

DeepSeek’s Harness team has launched Super-Agent, which is designed to scan developer discussions for feedback on coding problems and recommend possible solutions. The company says its goal is to provide the maximum value with the minimum human attention.

That’s a significant departure from the familiar chatbot workflow. Typically, developers describe a problem, provide some context, and then ask the AI tool to write or fix code. DeepSeek’s approach attempts to bring the agent closer to the conversations where those problems originate in the first place.

The technology behind this is called the agent harness, a software scaffolding that wraps around a large language model and equips it with the tools to take on more complex tasks. DeepSeek set up its Harness team earlier this year to build agents that can provide the coding services of leading US AI firms.

But this is a prototype, not proof that DeepSeek has already surpassed established rivals. The announcement doesn’t set the bar for how reliable Super-Agent is for complex development work, or how ready it is for deployment at scale.

Claude Code and OpenAI Codex have serious competition to keep an eye on

Anthropic’s Claude Code is already helping developers navigate codebases, debug issues, write code, run tests, and make pull requests. And not just code, but agent-based workflows across software development, including parallel tasks and tools for reviewing code, have been demonstrated by Codex at OpenAI.

Now DeepSeek is moving into similar territory, but Super-Agent gets an interesting angle by focusing on proactively monitoring developer conversations. Rather than simply answering a developer’s question, it tries to figure out when a developer might need help.

DeepSeek

This is important because the next phase of AI competition is increasingly about agents that can automate entire chunks of work, not just generate impressive answers. OpenAI, Anthropic and DeepSeek are all pursuing that opportunity.

DeepSeek is also getting ready for a big financial push. In its latest fundraising round ahead of a planned initial public offering, the company has raised about 100 billion yuan ($15 billion), Bloomberg reported.

More competition could eventually lead to more capable and affordable coding tools for developers. But for now, Super-Agent is an early sign of the direction the industry is going – not a reason to uninstall Claude Code or Codex just yet.
