Apple has raised the price of every iPhone currently sold through its online store in Japan. The increase covers the iPhone 16, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, with prices climbing by as much as 11.3%.

The change arrives only a month after Apple raised Mac and iPad prices worldwide due to the ongoing memory crunch. This increase, however, appears to have more to do with the falling value of the Japanese yen.

How much more will iPhones cost?

The iPhone 17 now starts at ¥142,800, up from ¥129,800. The iPhone Air received the largest increase, climbing from ¥159,800 to ¥177,800, or about 11.3%.

The iPhone 17 Pro now costs ¥194,800 instead of ¥179,800, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max has gone from ¥194,800 to ¥214,800. Apple also raised the iPhone 17e from ¥99,800 to ¥107,800 and the iPhone 16 from ¥114,800 to ¥124,800.

Model Storage Old Price New Price Increase
iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB ¥194,800 (~$1,199) ¥214,800 (~$1,322) ¥20,000 (~$123)
iPhone 17 Pro 256GB ¥179,800 (~$1,106) ¥194,800 (~$1,199) ¥15,000 (~$92)
iPhone 17 256GB ¥129,800 (~$799) ¥142,800 (~$879) ¥18,000 (~$111)
iPhone Air 256GB ¥159,800 (~$983) ¥177,800 (~$1,094) ¥8,000 (~$49)
iPhone 17e 256GB ¥99,800 (~$614) ¥107,800 (~$663) ¥13,000 (~$80)
iPhone 16 256GB ¥114,800 (~$706) ¥124,800 (~$768) ¥10,000 (~$62)

The revised prices are already listed on Apple’s Japanese store (via iPhoneros). No similar iPhone increase has appeared in the US or other major markets so far.

Why are prices going up?

Apple has not explained the adjustment, but exchange rates appear to be the most likely cause. The Japanese yen recently fell to its weakest level against the US dollar since 1986, making imported products more expensive for companies selling them in Japan.

Once Japan’s 10% consumption tax is removed, the revised prices sit remarkably close to Apple’s US pricing. The iPhone 17 Pro Max works out to around $1,204 before tax, compared to $1,199 in the US. The iPhone Air lands at roughly $995, almost identical to its $999 US price.

Apple has adjusted regional prices in response to major currency movements before, so the latest increase is not unusual. It does, however, arrive during a wider wave of price hikes. Apple Music and select Apple One bundles also became more expensive recently, while new Mac and iPad buyers are now paying more for AppleCare+.
