Apple’s first iPhone Air made one thing abundantly clear: people love impossibly thin phones — right until they start worrying about battery life. That trade-off has followed almost every ultra-slim smartphone, and it looks like Apple doesn’t want history repeating itself.

A little battery goes a long way

A new leak from well-known tipster Digital Chat Station suggests the second-generation iPhone Air, expected in spring 2027, could feature a 3,500mAh battery. That’s roughly an 11% bump over the current model’s 3,149mAh cell. On paper, it isn’t a dramatic jump. But battery life has never been about capacity alone, especially on iPhones. Apple has spent years squeezing extra endurance out of relatively modest batteries through hardware and software optimization. An extra 11% could feel much bigger if the rest of the package also becomes more efficient. The obvious question is: where does Apple find the room?

A larger battery doesn’t necessarily mean a thicker phone. The company could redesign its internal layout, use a denser battery, or simply make better use of the available space. Rumors also suggest Apple could adopt Samsung’s newer CoE (Color Filter on Encapsulation) OLED technology, which produces a thinner display stack. If that happens, the saved space could be redirected toward a slightly larger battery without changing the phone’s dimensions.

A balancing act gets even trickier

Battery isn’t the only rumored upgrade. Several reports claim Apple is preparing to add a second rear camera to the iPhone Air, likely an ultra-wide sensor. That’s a meaningful change because the single-camera setup on the current model has often been seen as its biggest compromise, especially when compared to the regular iPhone. But adding another camera inside an already cramped chassis isn’t as simple as dropping in another sensor. Every extra component competes for the same internal space, which makes fitting a larger battery even more impressive — if Apple can pull it off.

The timing may also work in Apple’s favor. The rumored A20 chip, expected to be built on a 2nm manufacturing process, should deliver better power efficiency than previous generations. Pair that with a larger battery, and the iPhone Air 2 could offer noticeably better endurance without sacrificing the ultra-thin design that defines the lineup. The iPhone Air 2 is still expected to arrive in the first half of 2027, alongside the standard iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e. If these rumors prove accurate, Apple may finally be showing that slim phones don’t always have to come with a battery disclaimer.
