Back in 2021, Apple introduced a new feature with iOS 15 that uses your iPhone‘s motion sensors to measure how steady you are while walking. Called Walking Steadiness, it relies on custom algorithms to analyze balance, stability, and coordination, alerting users when their fall risk may be elevated. Apple now appears to be working on an improved version of the feature that could roll out later this year.

Apple has been working on a Health app revamp for quite some time, with leaks from early last year pointing to the addition of an AI-powered health coach, codenamed Mulberry. Bloomberg previously reported that the virtual coach would analyze activity and fitness data from Apple Health to offer personalized recommendations. However, the publication now says Apple has shelved plans for the virtual coach and will instead integrate some of its capabilities directly into the Health app.

One of these additions will reportedly “analyze a user’s gait with an iPhone camera” and is expected to arrive later this year. While Bloomberg hasn’t shared further details, the feature will likely be an upgrade to Walking Steadiness and allow Apple to visually assess how you walk and offer guidance on improving stability and balance.

More details are expected at WWDC 2026

There’s no word yet on a release timeline, but Apple could announce the feature at WWDC 2026 and roll it out with iOS 27. Along with this new feature, Bloomberg says Apple may also include new video content in the revamped Health app.

As per a previous report, the move to shelve the AI-powered health coach and fold its capabilities into the Health app follows a leadership shift at Apple’s health division. The company is said to be pushing for faster execution and more compelling, app-based health features, rather than launching a new health service.
