Nearly a month after announcing the GPT-6.1 Sol model, OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Terra today. The latest addition to the family focuses on computer use, visual reasoning, coding, and professional work, while costing 50% less through the API than GPT-5.6 Terra.

OpenAI says Terra can handle everything from filling out browser forms and working inside spreadsheets to interpreting technical drawings and editing videos. The company says it can also complete computer-based tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

GPT-6.1 Terra gets surprisingly close to Astra

On Agents’ Last Exam, which measures how well AI agents complete professional computer tasks, GPT-6.1 Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort while costing about one-third as much per task.

GPT-6.1 Terra substantially outperforms GPT-5.6 Terra on Agents’ Last Exam, a test of how well agents use software at work.

It even matches GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token and finishes tasks over 3× faster on average than both Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. pic.twitter.com/pzAmnvjBUi

OpenAI says Terra also performed on par with GPT-6 Astra on the same benchmark at one-tenth of Astra’s price per token. On MMMU-Pro, which tests visual reasoning, Terra came close to both Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Coding sees a sizable improvement as well, with Terra scoring 50.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum reasoning effort, compared to 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or Astra for the most complex coding tasks.

Terra is much cheaper to run

GPT-6.1 Terra costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens through the API, while cached input costs $0.05 per million tokens. OpenAI is rolling Terra out today to eligible paid users through ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can also access it through the API. GPT-6 Astra, by comparison, costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, making Terra one-tenth as expensive at standard API rates. The tradeoff is capability at the very top end, as OpenAI still recommends Astra for its most demanding reasoning, coding, research, and professional workloads.
